  • Hailing as the most populous city in the United States, New York City is the center of the metropolitan area; its impact upon fashion, technology, media, and education, among other things, is significant. Upwards of 800 languages are spoken throughout the city, as it was the legal immigration point into the United States; this also makes it one of the most culturally diverse cities in the world. With New York City offering an array of artistic, educational, and exciting entertainment options, deciding what to do on your NYC vacation can be challenging. The Statue of Liberty is one of the most popular sites in the City, and something that everyone should get to witness in person. Located on Liberty Island in the New York Harbor, this colossal neoclassical sculpture is one of the most recognizable icons of freedom in the United States. The Statue of Liberty is also a UNESCO World Heritage Site due to it being such a notable statement of human rights and democracy, among other traits. You can even climb to the crown of the statue: 20 stories totaling 354 steps. If that’s too much work, stay on the ground and explore the museum located in the pedestal.
  • Another high in the sky site to visit while exploring the big apple is the Empire State Building, a 102 story skyscraper located in Midtown Manhattan. Standing at a total of 1,454 feet tall, it is another one of the defining structures in New York City. Go up to the observation deck found on the 86th floor of the building for a 360 degree view of the City that will take your breath away. To take it a bit further, there is another observation deck located on the 102nd floor of the Empire State Building which offers even better views of the city below. 30 Rockefeller Plaza, the center of Rockefeller Center in Midtown Manhattan is another building of height to explore on your New York City getaway. More commonly known as the Comcast Building, it stands at 850 feet high and is most notably known for housing NBC Studios, where shows like Saturday Night Live and The Tonight Show with Jimmy Fallon are taped. If you plan your trip far enough in advance, you can attempt to get tickets to a taping of one of these shows which would be a once in a lifetime type experience. If you’ve worked up an appetite from a day of exploring, grab a nice dinner at The Rainbow Room; located on the 65th floor of Rockefeller Plaza it gives great views of the city. Time it right and you can even catch a beautiful sunset!
  • New York City is a hub for arts and culture, as it is home to many different museums and galleries to explore. The Metropolitan Museum of Art or more frequently known as The Met is the largest art museum in the United States and located right in New York City. Spend an entire day gazing on some of the most beautiful art and sculpture pieces from different areas and time periods from all over the world. The main building, which is considered one of the largest art galleries in the world, is located on the eastern edge of Central Park and could easily take an entire day to see it all. There are 17 different collections of art, each with their own curators and scholars specialized to the division. You can see a range of pieces, like the Arms and Armour Collection which stands as one of the most popular in the museum. With each collection varying, there is something for everyone to see at the Met. The American Museum of Natural History is another excellent museum found in the city, and also one of the largest museums in the world. With 28 interconnecting buildings that house 45 permanent exhibition halls, plan an entire day for this museum because you won’t want to miss one bit of it! There are over 33 million specimens in the collection, ranging from fossils and cultural artifacts, to minerals and human remains! It is also on the U.S National Register of Historic Places and is a NYC Land Mark.
  • For a more relaxed afternoon in New York City, take a stroll and a picnic lunch to Central Park, the most visited urban park in the United States (and arguably one of the most beautiful). Central Park was established in 1857 and currently spans 843 acres. It is also a designated National Historic Landmark and was even put on the tentative UNESCO World Heritage list earlier this year. Within the park you will find sculptures, lakes, four different types of bedrock, and a wide collection of plant life. Be sure not to miss a chance to see (or ride) the Central Park Carousel, one of the largest merry-go-rounds in the United States. The Central Park Zoo is also found in the park, and offers fun for the whole family. Many playgrounds are found scattered throughout the park, as well as two indoor restaurants. The park has been featured in many movies and depicted in art several times over, making it one of those New York City spots you just can’t miss. Brooklyn Bridge is another must-see architectural marvel located in the city, connecting the boroughs of Manhattan and Brooklyn over the east river. Completed in 1883, it is one of the oldest bridges in the United States. The best way to really get a feel for it is to walk or bike over it, as many people do on a daily basis. It is also both a National Historic Landmark and a National Historic Civil Engineering Landmark.
  • When it comes to New York City one of the most popular places to visit among visitors and residents alike is Times Square. At the junction of Broadway and Seventh, Times Square is not only a major intersection but an entertainment center and neighborhood that many flock to on a daily basis. Approximately 330,000 people travel through the square daily and it has an estimated 50 million visitors annually. Not only is there shopping, dining, and hotel buildings, but it also the site of the New Years Eve Ball Drop with draws in over one million people each year. If the hustle and bustle of busy streets and city lights in Times Square is too much, spend some time in the Broadway Theatre District located right around the corner from Times Square. Home to most of New York City’s Broadway theatres as well as many shops, bars, and restaurants the Broadway Theatre District is an exciting piece of New York to spend time in. Go see a broadway show, like Phantom of the Opera or Wicked, as having the opportunity to see a show in one of the Theatre District’s many stunning theatre ballrooms and buildings is not something to pass up. If shows aren’t really your thing you can check out Madame Tussauds of New York, where you can view perfectly sculpted wax figures of celebrities and other prominent people of society.
  • New York City is home to many iconic buildings and streets, but one thing that really makes it a top notch destination is the food selection. There are entire streets and neighborhoods devoted to a plethora of different foods, and with so many cultures in New York City you can almost eat across the world! One of the most popular of these neighborhoods is Manhattan’s Chinatown. Serving up many different Chinese dishes at what can be an overwhelming amount of restaurants to choose from, it can be hard to decide where to start. Wo Hop is the place to go for the authentic Chinese-American food, and if you are a fan of dim sum be sure to stop by Golden Unicorn, as it is one of their specialties. The Halal Guys, a street-food cart in the Midtown West area serves up a delicious lamb over rice that people wait in line over an hour for. While in New York City you absolutely have to eat a bagel, one of the city’s biggest staple foods. The Bagel Store located in Williamsburg serves up multi-colored bagels and makes a wild variance of cream cheese options, like cannoli and bacon-cheddar or funfetti. A trip to New York City wouldn’t be the same if you didn’t grab a slice of pizza as it is another city staple. Patsy’s Pizzeria located in East Harlem is one of the city’s best. Opening its doors in 1933, Patsy’s Pizzeria serves up classic pizza at classic prices. Joe’s Pizza, which has a few locations throughout the city, is known for it’s classic cheese pizza: some of the best in the city.
