Pajama Party

Are you sitting at work in your PJ’s today? There actually is  a “National Wear Your Pajamas to Work Day”! I stumbled upon the official website and it says that originally the “National Wear Your Pajamas to Work Day” was always the day after taxes are due in the United States. Working from home, we are fortunate to have the luxury of celebrating this awesome day any day of the year that we want. This freedom of choice of wardrobe does not stop at working at home in your pajamas, it extends to every aspect of your business.

I know what it’s like to work at home, so pajamas and sweats are kind of a staple part of my wardrobe and it’s actually how I begin many of my days. Thinking back to my days of business suits and pumps, it’s nice to feel good about the fact that you can wear whatever you want in the comfort of your own home office. Wake up in the morning, make coffee and, thanks to available technology, sit down in front of a laptop in our very own kitchen, start helping clients and making money!

But working in your boxers or nighties doesn’t necessarily mean you have to go to your computer straight from bed, complete with disheveled hair and drool running down your cheek. To keep my self-discipline, I go for an early walk, take a shower and try to get to my desk by 7:30 or 8:00 AM.

Unless you are Hugh Hefner, “working in your PJs” does not necessarily mean literally wearing pajamas. I’m never exactly dressed to the nines when I’m sitting at my desk, but any sort of comfortable clothing will do, such as a jogging suit or a T-shirt and jeans. I at least try to wear something suitable so that I can answer the door when the postman knocks.

Industry acceptance has opened a whole new lifestyle for countless people who want to run a travel business from home. But working in your PJs doesn’t mean you have to be less productive than a suit-and-tie person. You’re being practical, and you’re enjoying the flexibility that working at home affords you.

End the guilty feelings. Working from home means never having to call-in sick. You can start later in the day without taking a whole day off because you woke up with a headache. You can have that three hour lunch with an old friend. No one’s watching your clock to make sure you don’t take an extra fifteen minutes. Spend more time with your children, your husband or partner. Watch your children and grandchildren grow and not miss their milestone moments. You can do it all, without your boss wondering where your priorities are.

Work at your own pace. If you don’t get something done, you don’t fret about it. You can always go back to work whenever you have the opportunity. You decide what’s important and what’s urgent. You run your own schedule and change it at the blink of an eye.

You can work at home during the hours that make the most sense for you. Maybe you’re not a nine-to-five person. When you work at home you can work six to two, or midnight to five in the morning, if that suits you.

When you work at home, you can schedule your days off and vacations on your own schedule. Appointments can be arranged at your most convenient time and place. The only thing that restricts your flexibility is the need to meet your customers’ important needs and keeping outside commitments.

Decide where to work in your pajamas. Working from home is portable. When most traditional store front agents work from behind their desks, we on the other hand, can work from the road. How about working in those pineapple print pajamas from the balcony of your Hawaiian hotel?

Saving the Planet. When you work at home, you never have to fight traffic to get to work on time. Your longest commute is from your bedroom to your desk. You will save on gas and help the fight against global warming.

If like me, you’re working from home today, be grateful that every day can be “Wear Your Pajamas To Work Day”, if that’s what you feel like doing. Although “NWYPTWD” is rather obscure, now when caught in your PJ’s at three o’clock in the afternoon you can explain that you are celebrating a holiday! Working at home is not about getting to live your whole life wearing pajamas, it is about freedom of choice and that is a truly priceless commodity.
