Mountainous Beauty in Glacier National Park

The United States is home to 59 National Parks, spanning all over the country. It can be hard to decide which to visit next but after learning about the wonderful things Glacier National Park has to offer, the choice will be an easy one. Thanks to Vacations By Rail, the supplier sponsor of this article, you won’t miss any of the beauty or history of Glacier National Park.

You can find Glacier National Park situated in the state of Montana  on the Canada-United States border. Encompassing over one million acres, as well as parts of two mountain ranges, over 130 named lakes, hundreds of species of animals, and over 1,000 species of plant life, Glacier National Park is unique in other ways too. For example, Glacier National Park is one of two parks known as the Waterton-Glacier International Peace Park (along with Waterton Lakes National Park, located in Canada). Established in 1932, the world’s first ever international peace park were both later designated as World Heritage Sites in 1995.

PictureGlacier National Park is perfect for any hiker, or hiking-enthusiast, as it contains over 700 miles of trails. Take a simple day hike on one of the shorter trails, or pack a bag and plan for a longer excursion. Glacier National Park allows for back-country camping, though you must plan accordingly: often times the trails are still covered with snow through June and even July! If you’re not up for a hike, take a boat ride in a historic wooden boat on one of the smaller lakes within Glacier National Park. One of the most popular lakes to see within the park is Hidden Lake, as it also doubles as one of the popular hiking destinations at Glacier National Park. Hidden Lake is beautifully surrounded by mountains, including Bearhat Mountain and Clements Mountain.

PictureArguably the most popular spot within Glacier National Park is Going-To-The-Sun Road. It is the only road that crosses the continental divide through Logan Pass at its highest point. Sometimes abbreviated as “Sun Road” it is also registered as a National Historic Place, National Historic Landmark, and Historic Civil Engineering Landmark. Guided tours are offered along the road in vintage, yet renovated, 1930’s red buses; modern shuttle buses and and other tour buses operate in this area as well, but only for short trips. Be sure to also check out the Logan Pass Visitor Center, which has gained a spot on the National Register of Historic Places. The preserved ecosystem in Glacier National Park is nearly one of its kind, making it the centerpiece of a protected region referred to as “The Crown of the Continent Ecosystem.”
