60-Second Geography

Bangkok, Thailand

  • Bangkok is known as Krung Thep Maha Nakkon in Thai, which is translated as “City of Angels” in English. It started as a small, trading post in the 15th century on the banks of the Chao Phraya River. Since then, Bangkok has grown into quite an expansive city; and the cultural, financial, and business center of Thailand. All of this, while maintaining its historical relevance and beauty.

  • Magnificent temples to the Buddha are a main attraction in Bangkok. The Grand Palace, built in 1782, was the home of the Thai King, the Royal court, and the administrative seat of government for 150 years. Inside the walls of the palace were the Thai war ministry, state departments, and even the mint. Also within the walls of the Grand Palace is the Temple of the Emerald Buddha (Wat Phra Kaew). The Emerald Buddha (Phra Putta Maha Mani Ratana Patimakorn) is a statue of the Buddha in a meditation pose, carved from a single block of emerald. Along the west bank of the Chao Phraya River is the Temple of Dawn (Wat Arun). This landmark, with its spire piercing the sky, is beautiful in the day — but stunning when lit up at night.

  • Of course, no trip to Thailand is complete without a ride in the city’s famous tuk tuk’s. These three-wheeled vehicles are easy to find, and will taxi you around the city for a fee. Not only do they serve as a taxi, they also serve as tour guides. You hail them down as they pass by on the street, or find a stand where they await customers. These open-air vehicles are one of the most iconic images of Thailand, and shouldn’t be missed.

  • Food in Bangkok is plentiful and exotic. Floating markets sell fruits, vegetables, and local food cooked on boats. There are several markets to choose from along the canals and rivers of Bangkok. The streets are awash in delicious smells from the food of open-air vending stalls. You can find all manner of Thai dishes along the busy streets of Bangkok, night or day.

  • The nightlife of Bangkok is world-renowned. High-end rooftop bars give phenomenal views of the Thai capital. Nightclubs with busy dance floors are happening places most nights. Trendy cocktail bars offer a chill drinking experience. There’s more than enough nightlife for the locals, much less a holiday in Thailand.

There are many reasons to visit Thailand, but Bangkok should be in the top reasons. Whether it be for the awe-inspiring places in nature, the stunning temples, or exotic food – Back-Roads Touring Co. will show you the true culture of Bangkok – of Thailand
