  • Cienfuegos, which literally translates to ‘one hundred fires’, lies on the southern coast of Cuba. The city has also been dubbed La Perla del Sur, meaning ‘Pearl of the South’. It was established in 1819 by French immigrants. To this day, you’ll find French influence in the architecture and street design through all of the city (including a mini-Arc de Triumph). The houses are the colorful, Caribbean tones of pink and blue Cuba is known for. But, the streets are a bit wider than other Cuban cities. From calm harbors to historic structures—Cienfuegos will light a fire in your imagination.

 

  • To walk around the city center, Pueblo Nuevo, is to travel back in time. The mixture of French and Spanish architectures is also noted in its culture. It was put on the UNESCO World Heritage List for its Urban Historic Centre, which is a great example of 19th century Spanish Enlightenment urban planning. Here, you can find hundreds of buildings from the 19th Our Lady of the Immaculate Conception Cathedral is prominent feature of Pablo Nuevo. It was built in 1833, but wasn’t declared a cathedral till 1903. The Reina Cemetery, with its marble tombs and angels overlooking the dead, can be walked all day without pause. This unique style of cemetery celebrates the lives of those gone with art and style.

 

  • Eating and celebrating a huge part of Cuban culture. In the city center is the Palicio de Valle, where you can eat authentic Cuban food, or have a drink at their rooftop bar with a panoramic view of the city and harbor. You can catch salsa music and dancing at Club Beny More, which is named after the famous singer and songwriter. A few drinks, some fine music, and passionate dancing—what more could ask for in a good time?

 

  • Of course, no Caribbean vacation is complete with relaxing on a beach. Rancho Luna Beach is perfect for gathering up some much needed sun or, swimming or snorkeling in the blue waters. It’s usually not crowded, which makes it the perfect place to relax.

 

  • The Botanical Garden of Cienfuegos (Jardin Botanico de Cienfuegos), which covers 97 hectares, is only 14 km outside the city center. This are is a wonderful daytrip out of the city, and you can spend hours exploring its natural beauty. The nature near Cienfuegos can accessed quite easily. El Nicho has dozens of waterfalls, trails, and natural ponds to astound the senses. Harbor boat trips will give a fresh view Cienfuegos, along with some fresh water fishing.

 

  • The Fortress of Nuestra Senora de los Angeles de Jagua (Castillo de Jagua) overlooks and guards the entrance to the Cienfuegos Bay. This fortress was built in 1745 to protect the citizens from English pirates. Built from limestone, it still has a functional drawbridge. You can take a short ferry ride from the city center to get there.

 

  • Santa Clara, only an hour outside of Cienfuegos, can be visited by those interested in the revolutionary Che Guevara. Not only is this his final resting place, there is a museum to explain his history as well. The Delfinario Dolphinarium, located on the north side of the island, will get you up-close and personal with dolphins. They have dolphin shows, where tricks are showcased. But, the real event here is to swim with dolphins.
