  • Chengdu is the bustling capital of Sichuan province, and is nestled next to hilly and mountainous terrains. The city itself is flat, but changes drastically as you head west. It is a mix of old and new, with skyscrapers brushing the clouds and temples dotted throughout the city. Steeped in tradition, yet modern, Chengdu offers up many types of activities for you to enjoy.

  • Chunxi Road is the spot in Chengdu to shop while on vacation. Not only that, but you get to experience the life of the Chinese people as they move about in their daily life. As you walk up and down the 1 km road, neon has replaced rows of merchants selling wares and goods. Also in Chungdu are tea houses, which can be somewhat compared to the atmosphere of a coffee shop. Tea houses are relaxed atmospheres for relaxing or playing games such as mahjiang (a game which uses tiles that have to be mathched) with people. Some tea houses are relaxing the day away around parks or on sidewalks, while others offer traditional Chinese opera performances. There’s even one when visiting the Wenshu Monastery

  • Mount Qincheng has 36 peaks, 72 caves, and 108 scenic spots. It is on the western edge of Chengdu, and is one of the birthplaces of Taoism. Qincheng is considered a UNESCO World Heritage Site for the Dujiangyan irrigation System, which dates back to the 3rd century B.C. This irrigation system provides water to the fertile farmland of the Chengdu plains. Mt. Qincheng is also known for its many ancient temples and other Taoist holy sites, at the foot and hiking up the 5,200 ft mountain. You can find many of these ancient sites along the paths leading around the mountain. The Jianfu Palace has two temples and three compounds in the style of the Tang Dynasty (618-907). A major temple is the Tianshi Cave, where a stone statue of Zhang Tianshi (the founder of Taoism) stands. There are many other amazing sites to behold among the lush forests on Mount Qicheng while you hike through picturesque natural settings.

  • Located only 10 km from downtown is the Chengdu Research Base of the Giant Panda Breeding. The reserve on site is an attempt to recreate the Giant Panda’s natural habitat, so that they may breed without interference. Given that there are fewer than 2,000, this is important work to prevent the extinction of a well-loved species. Here you can watch these magnificent animals in their daily life, while receiving information about their plight and habits. The base also cares for other rare and endangered animals like lesser pandas, black-necked cranes, white storks, and over 20 more species. And, as if this natural beauty is not enough, there is a museum with information on pandas and many other animals. The Chengdu Research Base is a must-see for any traveler to Chengdu.

  • Depending on the time of year, you can catch spirited festivals celebrating life. The Grand Temple Fair, during Spring Festival (Chinese New Year), is 15-day-long festival that showcases traditional Sichuan folk art. The Wuhou Temple Fair is a colorful affair with lights, lanterns, and performances of traditional Chinese entertainment. There are also performances of ballad singing, storytelling, comic dialogues, and acrobatics—while lanterns light the festival with a cheer for the God of Happiness.

Chengdu is a place to experience the Chinese culture in all its glory. Whether you fancy a hike in the charm of its natural habitats, a visit to the home of the endangered Giant Panda, or simply to witness a city that still follows traditional ways—ChinaTour wants you see this enchanting city.
