  • The Old Town center of Cartagena is surrounded by 13 km (7 mi) of colonial stone walls. These walls can walked and toured to take in the city, and are especially great for watching gorgeous Caribbean sunsets. You can visit fortresses along the walls meant to protect the city from the English. These walls are a UNESCO World Heritage site for classic examples of military fortifications and an important way station for explorers of the time.

  • Inside the walls of the colonial city lies Old Town, a collection of colorful houses and buildings of colonial architecture. These brightly colored walls breathe life into the air of the city center. Balconies and walls are covered in the ever-blooming flowers of the bougainvillea, accentuating the already festive feel of Cartagena. Cobble stone streets maze through the city center, giving an excellent path for discovery if you want to walk around. The Cathedral of Cartagena (Metropliton Cathedral of Saint Catherine of Alexandria), finished in 1612, is one of the oldest episcopal sites in the Americas. Within, you’ll find it simply decorated with a marble pulpit. From outside, it stands as an exemplary style of colonial architecture.

The steps leading to the top of the hill are steep, and can take up to 30 minutes to walk. Regardless of how you get there, the interior beauty of the convent features a flowered patio and a stunning image of the La Virgen de la Candelaria (patroness of the city). You can spend the day lying on the beach or swimming in warm, calm waters. The rustic beach bars and cabanas add a sense of island life.
