Doc Martin, Poldark, Mad Alice and the Land of the Red Dragon

If you’re a fan of Doc Martin, Poldark, the legends of King Arthur and Cream Teas, check out my top story which can be customised for independent clients or small groups.

If developing higher end UK-bound business is on your agenda, with my help, the new Best Loved Hotels’ Travel Guide should become a well-thumbed guide to some of the best in British in British hotel keeping.

With non-stop flights into the Manchester gateway on the increase, I’ve added a few bright ideas that will add something extra to tours heading for the great heritage cities of York and Chester and some imaginative suggestions for North Wales, the Land of the Red Dragon.

For fans of these two popular TV series, let’s talk about a close encounter with the On Location world of Doc Martin, Poldark and the myths and legends of King Arthur and the Knights of the Round Table. Add some upstairs/downstairs stately homes visits, some superb river valley gardens, the inevitable Cornish Cream Tea and you’ve created a customised tour for a couple of avid fans or a small group of 6-8. Salisbury Business as Usual

After all the recent and unhelpful publicity about Salisbury, you’ll be pleased to know that it’s very much the case of business as usual in the iconic, medieval city and its surrounding countryside. The cathedral, home to one of only 4 copies of the Magna Carta is offering new tours for 2018/2019 and the Georgian Mompesson House is a joy to behold.

York’s Grand Gets Grander

Their $21m redevelopment has increased the hotel’s luxury bedrooms from 107 to a grand total of 207. They have also opened an executive lounge, two new restaurants including The Rise which serves modern British dishes and Hudsons by Craig Atchinson, their 3AA Rosette fine dining restaurant and a brand-new arrival lounge, ensuring a seamless and luxury experience for all their guests.

The Bloody Tour of York

Let award-winning Mad Alice spice up your York walking tour as she takes you down snickleways (small side streets and footpaths), recounting the city’s gruesome and grisly past. Stories of invasions, executions and heads on spikes are rife on every corner as are the tales of some famous historical characters. No ghost stories here – the truth is far more sinister!

Cheshire’s Gardens of Distinction

Chester’s surrounding county is Cheshire and it’s packed with quintessentially English gardens, botanic blooms, oriental plantings, secret gardens and privately-owned properties that open only when at their best. It also hosts the RHS Flower Show at Tatton Park (July 18-22) and although the lead time for a small group is too short for 2018, it takes place annually around the same dates.

Choir Practice

To listen to the singing of a genuine Welsh Male Voice Choir is a unique and moving experience. Born from the community spirit forged in the coalmines and slate quarries, dropping in to see them in rehearsal can be as stirring and enjoyable as a full-scale concert, but with the added interest of discovering what goes on behind the scenes.

North Wales for Foodies

They say we are what we eat and with one third of Britain’s sheep and a quarter of its cows living in Wales, you can see why the Welsh are such a happy lot. The multi-award winning Bodnant Welsh Food Centre makes a notable addition to any itinerary either before or after an hour or two at the nearby Bodnant Gardens, one of the finest in Britain. Ask me to time your visit to coincide with one of the many food and beer festivals taking place throughout North Wales.

Ride One of the Great Little Trains

The Great Little Trains of Wales represents 12 of the narrow-gauge heritage railways across Wales. Each one is an individual attraction with its own unique history and heritage and the list includes the world’s oldest independent railway company, the world’s first preserved railway, Britain’s only rack and pinion railway and the last steam railway to be run by British Rail. A ride on one of these great little trains changes the pace of any tour as does a horse-drawn cruise across the Pontcysllte Aqueduct in Llangollen.

  1. anordman1 says:

Are there currently tours of the World of Doc Martin & Poldark available?

  2. I’m sure some of the major tour operators will include it in their itineraries to Cornwall. I provide customised, driver guided programmes which go into Poldark and Doc Martin in much more depth. Please contact me for further details on ptickner@customgb.co.uk
