Ted Turner was once interviewed by the TV show 60-Minutes. Atlanta-based Ted Turner once owned the Atlanta Braves as well as being a Cable TV tycoon. He also captained a sailing vessel in The America’s Cup. Toss in a marriage to Jane Fonda and you have quite the guy.
Okay, so you and I have never captained an America’s Cup winner, or owned a jet, or owned a major league baseball team, or owned thousands of acres of land, or given billions of dollars to charities, or married the daughter of a famous actor, or a lot of other things that has nothing to do with you and me.
What I got out of the interview was a man who seemed to be enjoying his life while taking more than his share of serious hits to his forward movement.
He said during the interview on more than one occasion, “You can’t cry over spilt milk.” Have you ever heard that one before? Do you endorse the concept? In other words, Mr. Turner was reminding us that no matter who you are, you can’t win them all.
You may not have a familiar name like “Turner” but you still have a lot to offer in the years ahead. Although you can cry over spilt milk, it really won’t do you much good.
The economy? What are you going to do? Slow business? What are you going to do? Don’t cry. Don’t whine. Don’t complain. Just do what you can do to make more people glad they know you. That is all you can do and that alone may just be all you have to do.
Thank you Ted (may I call you Ted?) for the whack in the head. “You can’t cry over spilt milk.”
So get up, get out, and get going.
