Don’t Bite Off More Than You Can Chew

For many of you this advice may sound incredibly boring, mundane, or even amateurish. It isn’t. Here is a cliché worth internalizing: Don’t bite off more than you can chew.

I tell you this because before you know it you will be writing yet another year-end, fictitious list outlining all the things you are not going to accomplish in the coming year. We are well into the current year and I am betting you still have a number of items on this year’s list yet to be addressed – no less accomplished.

Hence, my advice to you today is very timely.

When conjuring up to-do lists I have a better idea. I have a more realistic idea. I have a more logical idea. Why not write a “wish list” that at least has a small chance to work in your favor. Write down just two objectives you can work on for the next defined period of time.

What two objectives you ask? You don’t expect me to do everything for you do you? I just simplified the mission by at least ten fold. You have to decide what two items you intend to achieve.
But if you insist I will give you a hint.

  1. Increase your current “good-guy” customer list by adding 12 more good guys. For the sake of argument “good guy” translates to “profitable.” Just 12.
  2. Budget a set number of dollars for your personal development. If you need a number, how does $250 sound? You won’t have to hesitate to buy a book, attend a course, join a tele-class or subscribe to a personal development magazine now that you have set aside funds for these expenditures. Now you can make Barnes & Noble your favorite coffee shop. Since you have already budgeted for such luxurious expenses it won’t hurt at all.
  3. I know I said two, but here is a bonus item: for the rest of the year, simply work hard, honest and smart. The rest will fall into place nicely.
  4. I’m on a roll. #4 calls for you to “dump” three clients who are driving you to drink. (Notice I didn’t suggest that you stop drinking.) But now a few cold ones at the end of the day will be a result of your choosing.

I’m not even going to list number five. But if I did, it would involve finding more ways to have fun in this, the greatest industry there is …. involving the world.
