Marketing Mistake #8: You Are Boring People

You can answer this one yourself: Who do you want to spend time with?

Choice A: A boring, whining, negative person whose mantra is “whoa is me.”

Choice B: A proactive, fun, creative, idea-generating bundle of energy whose mantra is “sounds like fun.”

This is what is known in the business as a “no-brainer.”

Give me the “action-guy/gal,” each and every time, who understands how the game is played and realizes that sometimes you are the windshield while other times you are the bug.

I am reminded of an interview I once saw on TV. Howard Cosell was interviewing Jimmy “The Greek” Snyder. When asked what he liked best in life Jimmy responded quickly with, “I like to win.” Howard’s follow up question was “What do you second best?” Just as quickly The Greek answered, “I like to lose.”

This put it all in perspective. Jimmy liked the action. Sometimes you win, and sometimes you lose. But it is the thrill of the game that keeps him excited and moving forward.

And, so it is with you. Enjoy the game you are playing regardless of the immediate outcome. The dice will soon be rolling in your favor.

If you are boring – stop being boring.

If you are not boring, don’t become boring.

Need a slogan to pace your day? Fail Faster.

Failing at anything is never boring. In fact, it often is quite exhilarating. Don’t fail “stupid.” But do get away from your daily comfort zone and stretch a little.

When asked what I feel is the most common shortcoming of today’s salesperson, two answers immediately come to mind.

(1) Visibility. Not enough people know you are alive.

(2) You are boring people to tears. It is time that you bring your true personality into the game. Roll those bones and get ready for the time of your life.
