#5: Networking Secrets

Everyone tells you that you should network. You might even believe that a bit of networking would be in your best interest. At the very least, you should be working your net.

If you are like me you are not particularly fond of walking into a room full of strangers figuring out what to say that will make an impression and result in a mind-blowing dialogue.

Good news. You don’t have to. Here are a few points to internalize prior to your filling out your name badge.

  1. You’re not attending this event to “sell.” Therefore there is no need to exhibit any stress whatsoever.
  2. You were attending this event to meet a few proactive, interesting, fun, and energetic people who enjoy playing the business game. Chances are a few of them are in the room. Your challenge is to find them. You can make it a game.
  3. Your strategy is to ask questions so others will open up with you.

The fastest way to do this is to become interested in others. You go to networking events as an interested participant knowing that there will be a few people worth getting to know. There will also be a few bozos. Just don’t become one of the bozos.

Remember that in order to be considered interesting, you must first become interested. But you can’t fake this interest. You need to become genuinely interested. Ask probing questions and then listen intently to the answers.

Once you hone this professional skill, networking events will become one of your favorite past times.
