Bariloche with Aerolineas Argentinas

San Carlos de Bariloche, otherwise known simply as Bariloche, is a medium-sized city at the foot of the Andes Mountains in Argentina. Though the sight of the Andes is enough to excite the traveler with trekking and skiing opportunities, Lago Nahuel Huapi and the national forest in the area around Bariloche add to that. That’s why this edition of 60-Second Geography is brought you by Aerolineas Argentinas, Argentina’s largest airline and flag carrier — they’ll get the traveler to this land as one of only four airlines that travel to Bariloche.

  • Bariloche is located on the western border of Argentina, where Chile is only a short distance away. The city lies inside of the Parque Nacional Nahuel Huapi, a national forest that covers about 2,720 sq mi—the oldest national park in Argentina. Though the city of Bariloche itself doesn’t offer the traveler as much as larger cities, the natural environment is a perfect getaway for the traveler that seeks to get away from it all. The national park that surrounds it has an array of crisp lakes, trekking in mountains and other trails, and skiing in the winter months.

  • Trekking through forests and trails is the best way to truly experience the area around Bariloche. The trails offered around Bariloche can be done in half-day, day, or multi-day hikes. Some of these trails meander alongside lakes with glass-like surfaces, rise up to vistas that overlook the area, and lead to major landmarks in the area. One such trail is the Circuito Chico, a 37 mile route that can be hiked or biked, which starts in the downtown area of Bariloche. The traveler will get a full view of what the area has to offer as they do all, or part, of this iconic trail. Along the way, the traveler will find beaches on the lake, the foot of mountains, and even the most famous hotel in Bariloche—the Llao Llao Hotel.

  • One of the amazing sites for the traveler to see is Cerro Tronador, which is the highest mountain in the area. Here the traveler will see a waterfall from a cliff named Saltillo de las Nalcas. Also near the Cerro Tronador is the Ventisquero Nero (Black Glacier), an unusually colored glacier from the natural sediment in the area.
