  • One of the most astounding sites on Lake Titicaca is the Uros islands. This are small, man-made islands constructed from reeds. These reeds are call totora, and are a thick, buoyant reed that grows along the lake’s banks. They are created by laying layer after layer of the reed onto the water, until it is thick enough to support the weight needed. Many of these islands measure approximately 50 x 50 ft., while the largest is equal to half a football field. The totora reed is used for much more than the amazing feat of creating an artificial island. It is woven into the lives of the Uros people. The reed is used to build homes, boats, crafts – and is partially edible as well. Today, over 1,220 Uros live on an archipelago of 60 artificial islands. These marvels of ancient engineering should not be missed by the traveler.

  • The first thing you’ll notice about Amantani Island are two mountain peaks and terraced hillsides. Only 6 sq mi in diameter, it hosts the mountains of Pachatata (Father Earth) and Pachamama (Mother Earth). Both peaks have ancient ruins dedicated to their respective mother or father. Along the hilly terrain of the island is terraced farmland; where the people grow wheat, potatoes, quinoa, and other vegetables. The traveler will also notice the cattle, alpaca, and sheep grazing the lands; and more so, the lack of cars or hotels. Though there are no hotels, some of the population of 3,663 will open their homes to the traveler for overnight stays (organized by guides). These families who host also provide traditionally cooked meals. A perfect, traditional experience for the traveler looking to become more than a tourist.

  • Taquile Island is narrow and long, and the textile arts of this island are recognized by UNESCO as “Masterpieces of the Oral and Intangible Heritage of Humanity”. It is a rocky island once used by the Spanish as a prison. About 2,200 people live on the island, which measures 3.4 by 1.0 mile (5.5 by 1.6 kilometers). Their society is rooted in the ancient moral code of the Incas, “Ama sua, ama llulla, ama qhilla”. This translates to “Do not steal, do not lie, do not be lazy.” The traveler is more than welcome in this communal-based society, with their high-quality handwoven textiles and clothing.
Isla del Sol, Island of the Sun, is a legendary and sacred island where the Incas believed the god Viracocha created the sun. There is evidence of continual occupation since 2200 BC. With over 80 ruins dating back to the 15th century, the traveler will find many sites to explore. There are three cities on the Isla del Sol: Challapampa, Yumani, and Cha’lla. Each of the cities are near ruins, but the most popular ruins are the Palacio del Inca (located in the Chicana ruins). These ruins are on the northern tip of the long island, and are a maze of stone walls and doorways. Also known as El Laberinto (the Labyrinth), the inside of the maze contains a small well that is thought to contain sacred purifying water.

  • In balance with the Island of the Sun, is the Island of the Moon (Isla de la Luna). This island is known for its mythological significance to the Incas, and it is home to the ruins of the Temple of the Virgins. It is inhabited on the Western side by a small village of about 80 people (including children). The locals are friendly, the atmosphere tranquil and quiet, and the island is without electricity.

There are no many places on Earth that offer up such a fulfilling journey into the past, with culture and nature mixing to create the perfect scenery. The diversity of the Lake Titicaca area ensures that the traveler will have a getaway fitting for a break from everyday life. That’s why Marnella Tours is looking forward to showing travelers the magic of Lake Titicaca.
