• Sardinia is the second-largest island in the Mediterranean, just after Sicily, and is officially called the Autonomous Region of Italy. It has also been dubbed a “micro-continent”, due to containing a full range of environments. There are over 100 beaches along the coasts, ranging from rocky to cliffs to sandy. Though, regardless of the terrain, the water is still that common look of bright blue found in the Mediterranean. Sardinia is known for these beaches, as well as sailing, diving, horseback riding, hiking in the hills, and chilling at cafes along quaint boulevards.

• Cagliari is Sardinia’s capital and largest city that lies along the central-southern coast of the island. While the more modern of the Sardinian cities, Cagliari still appears as natural in the environment as the cities that have come before. Classic bright, yet a bit washed out, colors set the foreground during amazing sunsets. The arched entrances to arcades welcome the traveler to sit for a while, to take in the beauty of a city that savors its time. Of course, most travelers will be looking for the unique beaches which Cagliari has. The main beach in Cagliari is Poetto, which is 5-miles of sandy shore and gorgeous blue water. It is separated into the free and club beaches, depending on what kind of experience the traveler wishes to have. Though, if the traveler is looking for less of a crowd, a smaller beach named Calamosca isn’t far away – and has the same majestic feel of the other Mediterranean coasts. Cagliari is a fantastic place to relax and take in the Mediterranean mood.

• On the west coast of Sardinia is the city of Oristano. A smaller city with charm and many cathedrals, the traveler will also enjoy the natural area around it. A few sites to see in town are the Oristano Cathedral and the Tower of St. Christophorus. The Oristano Cathedral, built in 1195, is a Baroque-style cathedral in the historical centre of the city that features high walls surrounding the building and towers. The Tower of St. Christophorus, built in 1290, is a 62-foot-tall tower connected to a small church. Outside of Oristano are expansive areas of wetlands with flamingos and other aquatic birds lazing about, many trails to explore, and coastlines with sandy and rocky beaches. Oristano is a small gem away from it all, which the traveler will enjoy.
