Making up most of the east coast of Australia, with a northern tip nearly touching Papau New Guinea,  Queensland’s official motto is, “Beautiful one day. Perfect the next.” The second-largest state in the Commonwealth of Australia is also the third-most populous, giving the traveler plenty of room to roam through its one-of-a-kind natural settings. Bordered only to the west, by the Northern Territory, and to the south, by New South Wales, Queensland also has plenty of coasts to lounge-out on or explore on an explorational walkabout. Today’s 60-Second Geography is brought to you by AAT Kings, providing guided vacations to Queensland and more around Australia.

  • Starting on the north-eastern coast and moving our way down, Rainbow Beach is a must see for the traveler. It was originally named Black Beach after a few dunes that mixed with mineral-rich black sand with white sand, though it was renamed to reflect the reds, oranges, and yellows that make up the cliffs sitting just near the beach. Clear waters wash up on the miles of shore, and it even has Australia’s longest surfable wave at the Double Island Point. The activities are numerous for the more adventurous of travelers: paddle boarding, swimming with dolphins or sharks, renting a 4wd vehicle to explore the beach further, fishing, and exploring a shipwreck. The nearby town of the same name is smaller town of approximately 1,000 residents, making this beach a visit to e nature still rules.

  • Moving south, and closer to civilization, Noosa is a well-known destination for in Australia. It is a fashionable town that sits on the coast a bit north of Brisbane, a place to find high-quality resorts and natural settings in one area. Noosa is surrounded by Noosa Biosphere Reserve, a UNESCO example of a diverse ecosystem. From subtropical rainforests to relaxing beaches to outdoor activities, the city is a great place to find a balance of nature and comfort. Surfers and sunbathers dot the coast, some swimming with humpback whales, other travelers revel in the comfort of their resort without a care in the world. Noosa is also home to the Australia Zoo, which was setup by and the home base of the animal-whisperer himself—Steve Irwin. The zoo is one of the best in the world with a diverse selection of animals to see and learn about, like crocodiles, tigers, koalas, snakes, rhinos, Tasmanian devils, and kangaroos.

  • Further south is the major city of Brisbane, the most populous city in Australia at around 2.5 million. It is also one of the oldest cities in Australia. This metropolis has everything that the traveler would expect from a larger city: boutique restaurants, art galleries and culture, diversity around every corner, and top-quality accommodations. But because it is along the picturesque east coast of Australia, the beaches are just as paradise-like as the rest of the coast. With turquoise waters washing up on white sand, Brisbane has the best of both worlds when it comes to what traveler’s seek out.
