Exploring Cape Town

Known by the locals as the Mother City, Cape Town is the oldest city in South Africa. Its charms span from the natural wonders that surround it to a population diversity that is the most multicultural in the world. Mountains, wine, beaches, and magnificent sunsets are plenty. South African Airways is ready to fly the traveler to Cape Town.

Surrounded by mountains on three sides, Cape Town lies in a small valley that opens to Table Bay on the fourth side. This gives the city some fantastic beaches and views for the traveler to visit. A classic example of a beach to relax and take in the sun is Clifton 4th Beach, one of four beaches near each other, located only 10 minutes outside of the city center.

For a larger beach with an immediate view of the Twelve Apostles range, which is part of Table Mountain, there’s Camps Bay beach. While being just down the road from Clifton, it has more of a Mediterranean feel. Boulders Beach will astound the traveler with views of the endangered African penguins in their natural habitat, as they waddle the sands and splash in the water. With inviting blue waters, soft sand, and some of the most gorgeous sunsets to witness, Cape Town beaches are top-notch.

Another activity that most travelers will enjoy is touring the Cape Winelands. Just northeast of Cape Town, the stunning scenery mountains and hills combined with wine tastings is a treat. This iconic area has the ideal growing grounds for wines such as Sauvignon Blanc, Chardonnay, Cabernet Sauvignon, Shiraz, and Pinot Noir – a wide variety to choose from for sure. The oldest wine farm in Cape Winelands is Groot Constantia, started in 1685. Located on the Southern Slope of Table Mountain, it is not only known for its delicious wine but award-winning restaurants as well. Franschhoek is a small village with over 50 internationally acclaimed wineries that should be toured and enjoyed. The nearby towns of Paarl and Stellenbosch are both known for their production of cabernet sauvignon, as well as port and Pinotage. The Cape Winelands boasts some of the best wines in the world, and the traveler will drink up the tasty wines and scenery with glee.

The Bo-Kaap area of Cape Town is a colorful reminder of South Africa’s past. Situated on a slope, this area features brightly colored homes and cobble stone streets. This style represents Cape Town’s oldest surviving residential neighborhood. A multicultural neighborhood, its population is mostly Muslim; and has the Nurul Islam Mosque to visit. Walking through this neighborhood is an experience of perking up the sense as the colors pop with excitement and give the traveler a new memory for life.
