The Gulf of Papagayo

On the northwestern coast of Costa Rica is the Golfo de Papagayo, meaning “gulf of the parrot”. A place with the best of what the rest of the country has to offer: beaches, national parks, scuba diving, fishing, and much more. But the peninsula along it offers up resorts and protected natural landscapes within a gated community, and plenty of relaxation and adventure. Thanks to Costa Rica Dream Adventures, todays article will go into this recently developed part of an already popular destination, Costa Rica.

PictureThe allure of Papagayo is multilayered. The area has been designated to always have 70% of its area to remain as it has always been – a natural paradise full of biodiversity. Here, the 11 miles of pristine coastline hosts seven beaches, as well as 13 miles of hiking and biking trails that are frequented by wildlife. Outdoor activities are abundant. The blue waters are perfect for scuba diving, paddle boarding, surfing, kayaking, catamaran cruises, white-water rafting, snorkeling, and deep-sea fishing. Parts of the forests around the area are some of the last dry tropical forest in the world and are protected. Costa Rican nature surrounds the traveler on the Peninsula.

PictureBeaches along the Papagayo coast are some of the best in Central America. Playas del Coco is a beach for the those into night life, as well as being a fishing a town – which means seasoned captains available for fishing charters. Located near Playa del Coco is Playa Ocotal. While only 3 km away from the busier Coco, Ocotal is far more serene making it a great place to catch up on some R&R. Ocotal is also the closest beach to the Catalinas Islands, one of the top areas to scuba dive and snorkel. Then there is the Blue Flag recipient and paradise of Playa Hermosa. Hermosa, meaning ‘beautiful’ in Spanish, is another quiet and restful atmosphere that also has excellent diving opportunities.
