If you want to get to the top of this profession, you have to stop worrying about yourself and start thinking about helping others. Sounds absurdly simple. It isn’t.
Your primary goal is to stop selling and to start helping others.
When you appear to be selling, more often than not you come across looking push and even a bit aggressive or manipulative. Nobody I know enjoys being “sold.” You?
But when you are openly and sincerely interested in helping people, you will have their undivided attention and if things unfold as they should — the combination to their checkbook. This last sentence raises an additional “red flag.” You don’t want to have a hidden agenda. I just made it sound a bit conniving. If you actually lend assistance, the thanks you eventually receive will come in the form of fair payment for your services.
“Selling” and “helping” are two entirely different mind-sets.
A well-known sales trainer once went on record to say, “Focus on helping others first, and your turn will come.” Another quote worth thinking about comes from Zig Ziglar when he said, “You will get everything you want if you first help others get what they want.”
Looking at it from a third angle, make it your business to make other people successful. That can be your new mission statement: “To make others successful.”
If your product or service can help make other people successful, you will soon be taking one more step up on your personal success ladder.
Bottom line: Get out of “you” and into “them.” Focus on trying to help other people succeed. Use what you know and whom you know for a single purpose… to help others.
