How to Quick Start a Home Agency Without Killing Yourself, Part 1

I received this email just the other day:

“Dear Stuart, is there a fast way to get started with travel at home and not work myself to death?”

Could you answer her question? If you could, would you even invest the time?

This 18-word question could easily inspire me to write a 100-page book (appropriately called How to Quick Start a Home Agency Without Killing Yourself). Unfortunately, I am in no position to write a third book presently. Right now, my business plan has me hyper-focused on writing and delivering speeches, not books. I must remain disciplined.

If this inquiring agent was seeking a business coach, then perhaps I would have scheduled a series of custom coaching sessions. However, these meetings could not begin till my highly lucrative speaking season concluded. After all, keynotes and workshops produce the greatest income for me by a long shot. I must remain disciplined.

Presently I have no time to write the book or to be her business coach – according to my business plan. But, I did respond thoughtfully (and succinctly):

“No, there are no ways to start a home agency fast. Yes, you can have a successful home agency without killing yourself”.

The conversation ended as quickly as it had started – I have not yet received a response. To be honest, I am not sure if she was truly expected a substantive answer (free). Or, perhaps she was making a more of a general statement (more like a plea for help).

Do people come to you to pick your brain? I get these all the time. While I wanted to help desperately, I fought the urge and responded with good etiquette but maybe not with the extensive advice requested.

My simple solution to successful entrepreneurship is DISCIPLINE. Approaching business matters with discipline enables us to achieve prosperity without it destroying your health. Taking a truly disciplined approach ensures you run the business so it doesn’t run you (ragged).

Want a response full of substance? Watch for Part II of this Motivationally Speaking. I will reveal some essential areas of entrepreneurial discipline that will help build a home agency in a fair amount of time without killing yourself.

Entrepreneurial discipline means saying ‘no’ and ‘yes’ appropriately and consistently no matter how tempting it is to go momentarily off course.

If you run an agency you know it ain’t easy. I am sure you can identify with her question. But, if you choose entrepreneurship over employment then you must know also the high-mileage answer. Stay tuned…
