Thailand’s Colorful Charms

Bangkok, the land of delectable street food and colorful temples. This capital of Thailand was once called Siam, until the late 19th century. It is a mix of modern technologies and buzzing streets with an admiration for ties to tradition. The culture contains a sense of fun, whether it be the nightlife or haggling at a floating market. Bangkok and its surrounding areas of jungles and beaches are quite the pleasure to experience.

  • Just above the equator, Bangkok is a warm city. Though the heat comes through in more ways than just the temperature. Spicy and sweet food is available all along the streets at Bangkok’s well-known food vendors. These street vendors serve up fired rice with chicken or pork, papaya salad, barbecued fish, and more. Finding a good meal while walking through the city of Bangkok isn’t just easy – it is everywhere. The Damnoen Saduak Floating Market is another place to find food, as well as other handmade souvenirs the traveler can take home. Only an hour outside of Bangkok, this market has been a popular spot for tourists and locals alike for its unique collection of small, wooden boats (sampans) that seem to cover the canal itself.

  • The architectural aesthetic of Thailand is a mix of modern buildings and centuries-old village houses. The skyline is peppered with spires of temples that reach up to the heavens situated next to skyscrapers, while the people at the before-mentioned open-air restaurants crowd the sidewalks. A temple that stands out is the Wat Pho, a complex considered to be one of the first-class royal temples. It houses the largest collection of Buddha images in Thailand, including a large reclining Buddha statue almost 150 feet long. The reclining Buddha is also near The Grand Palace. This palace, a former royal residence and now museum, is a walled complex of extravagant buildings with golden spires and sloped roofs. Visiting these magnificent buildings, the markets, and restaurants is only a small fraction of what Bangkok has to offer.

  • For a more relaxing change of pace from the busy streets of Bangkok there’s the island of Phuket. Located in the south of Thailand, this island is the quintessential paradise for the traveler. White beaches shine in the sun, while other small islands jut like mountains from the clear waters. There are over 30 beaches along the coast of Phuket. Some of these include: The most popular, Patong Beach; Karon Beach, a lively beach just south of Patong; Kata Beach, a bit less raucous than the rest; and the quiet beach of Kamala. The beaches are great places to relax and enjoy the day, snorkel, scuba dive, or hit the bars for a good time. Phuket also has a wide selection of luxury resorts to choose from, making this island paradise perfect for any kind of traveler.
