12 Word Marketing Plan

For the next few days, I want to share my 12-Word Marketing Plan with you. “Get Up. Get Out. And Make More People Glad They Know You.” To many of my travel industry associates, these twelve words will be interpreted as absurdly simple and might even border on insulting their intelligence. No apologies from me, my amigos. 12 words are all that are needed to turn your businesses around.

To help internalize the message, I will dissect the words and provide my take on the subject accordingly. Today we will begin with the first two words… Get Up.

Get Up!

This clearly implies that you must overcome the force of gravity and that illusive concept we all know as inertia. Make no mistake about it. This is easier said than done. (This may even include a hidden message involving weight control but that is another subject for another book at another time by another writer.)

Too many people (maybe you) are sitting by their computers… sitting by their phones… sitting in front of their TV screens. As Dr. Seuss wrote in Oh! The Places You’ll Go, people are just sitting around playing the waiting game waiting in the waiting place.

I quote from the famous rhyming doctor:

For people are just waiting.
Waiting for a train to go
or a bus to come, or a plane to go
or a phone to ring, or the snow to snow or waiting around for a Yes or No or waiting for their hair to grow.
Everyone is just waiting.
Waiting for the fish to bite
or waiting for wind to fly a kite
or waiting around for Friday night
or waiting, perhaps, for their Uncle Jake or a pot to boil, or a Better Break or a string of pearls, or a pair of pants or a wig with curls, or another chance.
Everyone is just waiting.”

If you have not done so already, I recommend you scoot on over to Barnes & Noble and pick yourself up a copy of Oh! The Places You’ll Go by Dr. Seuss. This is not a children’s book. This is a book with the power to turn your life around for the better. It makes for an excellent gift for those who you hold dear and who are currently going through life’s ups and downs. The next time you’re in B&N’s pick yourself up a few copies.
The first part of my plan is to “get up.” Next we will talk about the importance of “getting out.”
