Procrastination

Here is a word that could be categorized as a “4-letter-word,” as far as I am concerned. Procrastination is a malady experienced by just about every man, woman, and child from sea to shining sea.

In short, it implies that it is okay to put off until tomorrow what could be done, stated, or accomplished today. In a few cases, this postponement of action warrants some consideration. After all, doesn’t “haste make waste”… according to a popular reminder first recorded in 1575 in John Ray’s proverb collection.

But I am also quick to remind you, “he who hesitates is lost.” I am not certain where this idiom was initially recited, but I do know that it strongly implies that speed in response can be a true differentiator.

Rescheduling, delegating, and pausing prior to springing into thoughtless action should not be confused with the concept of “procrastination.”

I think the practice of procrastinating is largely connected with a lack of discipline. If this does not pertain to you specifically, perhaps your procrastination stems from a current lack of confidence. You may be uncertain of what actions need to be taken and in what order.

Regardless of the reasoning for your tendencies to procrastinate, you must identify these shortcomings and come to terms with them sooner rather than later.

Time, as we all have come to understand, waits for nobody; and the window of opportunity does not remain open for very long in our competitive industry.

If you are in need of a battle cry, you might want to adopt this one as your own.

READY…FIRE…AIM.

This advice may fly in the face of what you perceive to be sound logic, but I ask you to reconsider. It has been noted time and again that an imperfect plan administered now will prove to be more effective than a perfect plan implemented later.

Write it down: Procrastination
