Don’t Bite Off More Than You Can Chew

I realize there is still over two months before we kiss 2020 goodbye and look forward to a new year filled with hope. Now is not too soon to begin planning for a prosperous future.

For many, the following advice may sound a tad boring, mundane, or even amateurish. It isn’t. Trying to do too much too soon is an exercise in futility.

Bottom Line: Don’t bite off more than you can chew.

I tell you this because in a few short months, you will once again be writing down the things you are not going to accomplish. Hence, my advice to you today is very timely.

With reference to next year’s to-do list, I have a better idea. I have a more realistic idea. I have a more logical idea. This year, why not write a “wish list” that has a small chance to work in your favor. Write down just two goals to work on in 2021.

  1. Slowly build your current “good-guy” customer list by adding 12 more “good guys.” For the sake of argument, “good guy” translates to “profitable.” Just 12. One every four weeks. If you find yourself adding more names, don’t panic. Just accept your good fortune.
  1. Budget for some personal development. If you need a number, how does $250 sound? Now, you won’t have to hesitate to buy a book, attend a course, join a webinar, or subscribe to a personal development magazine. You can make Barnes & Noble your favorite coffee shop while they still exist. Since you have already budgeted for such luxurious expenses, it won’t hurt at all.

I know I said two, but here is a bonus item:

For the next two and a half months, simply work hard, honest, and smart. The rest will fall into place nicely, and you will find 2021 will be kind to both you and your bank account.

I’m on a roll. Number four suggests that you “dump” five clients who are driving you nuts. The easiest way to do this without undue stress is to simply raise your management fee.

I’m going to skip a potential number five. But, if I was forced to add a fifth, it would involve finding ways to having more fun.
