A Note To Myself

I met my stepson when he was seven. Brian is 45 today. As hard as that is to believe, I consider that thought to be a HUGE wake-up call. “Time waits for no man.”

You are probably wondering what does this have to do with you, and why am I sharing this useless statistic with you. Maybe nothing. Maybe today’s message is for me.

As many of my loyal readers have come to understand, I am a big fan of “repetition.” At the risk of repeating myself for the umpteenth time, here comes a reminder that is worth remembering. I am sure you have heard it before.

Today’s message is being taken from a sign I have hanging over my desk. It simply reads: “WORK HARD TODAY TO AVOID DISAPPOINTMENT TOMORROW.”

And speaking of repletion, here is a quote I know you have heard from me before:

“If my pitcher would pitch at the beginning of the game,

the same way he pitches at the end of the game …

once he realizes he is losing,

he would not be losing on the first place.”

This quote came from Casey Stengel of baseball fame.

Both of these quotes serve as a reminder that your actions TODAY will determine your accomplishments tomorrow. And while your bogus excuses and ongoing tendency to procrastinate may tempt you from time to time, your future is arriving far too quickly to waste any time. To ensure better “yesterdays,” don’t screw up “todays.”

Buckling down is certainly not the easy route to take. But in the long run, (which will prove to be the short run as time continues to fly), you life will be far better off by doing today what you want to put off until tomorrow.

Author’s Note To Self: I hate it when I read my own stuff and see that I am talking to me. It is 49 degrees outside and, to avoid being called a hypocrite, I have to put on my swimsuit and head for the pool to swim for an hour.

May 17th will be here before I know it and, if I want to finish the 70.3 mile Ironman Triathlon in a semblance of good order, I will have to work hard today to avoid disappointment tomorrow.
