How to Differentiate Yourself from the Crowd.

“Talk is cheap.” No truer words have ever been spoken.

Most people have a tendency to tell people what they think they want to hear, regardless of what they are planning to do later.

If you want to distance yourself from the rank-and-file, this is one of the easiest ways to do it. Do what you say you are going to do. If you are not going to do it, don’t say it. If you say it, do it.

Based on experience, if you can prove to others that you are a person of your word, life is going to unfold in a very comfortable fashion for you for the next fifty years.

In today’s world, it seems that a written contract and a court of law are the only ways to support an agreement between two parties This may continue to be the case, but there is still room for you to become the “exception” by telling people what is about to happen—and then turning it into reality, without calling on the services of Judge Judy.

A Caveat to This Message Follows:

Whether you are going to a meeting or to a job assignment, arrive early, stay late, and always deliver your contributions on time—if not ahead of time. In other words, do more than people expect from a person in your position. The Japanese term Kaizen comes to mind which infers you do more than expected.

Don’t just tell people what you are going to do. “Show them what you can do.

For those of you who are still with me, I would like to give you two more tips that I believe will help you and your business.

  1. Start your day earlier. Set your alarm 15-20 minutes earlier than usual. This quiet time will soon prove to be the most valuable segment of your day.
  2. Identify what is holding you back and do everything in your power to rid yourself of this burden. I call this challenge “Dropping Your Rock.” You can’t afford to carry any dead weight around with you. Work at becoming sleek and streamlined. Drop your rock.
