George Washington Crosses the Delaware

On December 26, 1776, George Washington took temporary control of Trenton, New Jersey in the Battle of Trenton. The trek to Trenton required a crossing of the Delaware River in the dead of winter.

Due to these tough travel conditions, Washington arrived with 3,000 less troops than originally planned — and had to abandon the town after taking it from German Troops in a short battle.

Though this battle was not considered a major victory for the Americans, it did serve to raise morale among America's newly formed army.
