Launch of the Mariner 4

On this day in 1964, NASA launched the Mariner 4, the fourth spacecraft in a series developed to explore other planets using flyby technology.

The Mariner 4 was the first in the group to successfully complete a flyby and return with photos of Mars' (or any other planet's) surface. The spacecraft began the studies of the engineering required for long-duration interplanetary travel.
