Caught off-guard by the speed with which the Soviets launched, Sputnik ignited a race in space within the context of the Cold War between the United States and the USSR. With Sputnik, the world marked the start of the space age. Sputnik travelled at 18,000 miles per hour, and took 96.2 minutes to complete an orbit. Radio signals continued for 22 days from the craft. On January 4, 1958, the craft re-entered the atmosphere and incinerated as it fell to earth.
