The Resignation of Spiro Agnew

On this day in 1973, Vice President Spiro Agnew resigned from office. Agnew pleaded nolo contendere to criminal charges of money laundering and tax evasion after the revelation that he accepted bribes while governor of the state of Maryland. Agnew was disbarred by Maryland. His resignation created a constitutional use of the 25th Amendment as the vacancy prompted the confirmation of the House Minority Leader, Gerald Ford as his successor. Ironically, Ford then became president upon the resignation of Richard M. Nixon from the office of President.
