The United Nations

The United Nations was not the first attempt at creating an organization dedicated to international understanding. Years earlier the League of Nations had failed prevent World War II. On April 25, 1945 50 world governments met in San Francisco and began working on the charter for a new organization. Winston Churchill and FDR had earlier used the phrase "United Nations" in a declaration of unity in 1942 of nations in the Atlantic Charter. The United Nations was dedicated on October 24 1945 with the ratification of the Charter by France, the Republic of China, the Soviet Union, the United States of America and the United Kingdom. Currently there are 192 member states.
