Bliss Honeymoons, LLC – Laura checks out

I’m in the travel business. Day after day I work diligently to help others take the most memorable trip of their lives. After all, they’ve just spent months on end working hard and planning a wedding. They deserve a rest that usually includes a great destination or property, lots of memories, and endless amounts of good food and drink.

I’ve done quite a bit of hard work myself these past few months. I made a commitment at the beginning of the year to try to double my sales, and accomplish every single one of my New Year’s resolutions. Some of what I set out to do was easy, and has already been checked off as finished. Some items are still a work in progress. Other projects got off to a great start, and then suddenly hit the wall. It was within that last couple of weeks, when my new website project hit a major snag, that I had a revelation. Here I am, the person who spends day after day planning wonderful relaxing trips for people, and as of August 1st I have not taken a single day off the entire year. Not one. Sure there have been days that maybe I only spent a couple of hours working on work things, but there hasn’t been a single day this year where I have completely unplugged from work.

A couple of months ago I hired a marketing coach. It’s been an amazing experience. And with the economic challenges, I really feel like it was the right time to do it. But between the daily tasks of running the business, revamping our marketing materials, having six dealership locations to coordinate, and being a parent; it’s not uncommon for me to have at least one meal a day at my desk or lose track of the last time I took a shower. And yes time does fly when you’re having fun. But getting from January 1st to August 1st with no time off, makes me feel a bit hypocritical—especially when I’m in the business of sending people on vacation so they can escape their jobs.

So, as you probably guessed, I am taking a day off. I am headed for Mexico tomorrow. Yes I have eight site inspections scheduled, but I also made sure there is one entire day where there is nothing for me to do but lay on the beach or by the pool with an umbrella in my drink.  I’ll have four glorious days of someone else making my bed and cooking my food, and remembering why vacations are such wonderful things. My phone will go unanswered. My email will go unread. But if I know nothing else for certain, I am sure it will all still be here when I return.  Leave a comment if you like, but don’t expect an answer, well not for a bit!
