After five years, Jerry Mpufane has left his post as president of the North American hub of South African Tourism, the government tourism board, to pursue other opportunities. Although his tenure 2019-2024 included the time of COVID’s global rampage, Mpufane leaves SAT in a better position than when he took the post in May 2019. When he started, North America, including Canada and the United States, was the third largest source market for South African visitors. Now it’s the largest Read the rest of this entry »

(Part 2 of 2. For two more great ideas, see Nine Great Ideas for 2024: Travel Advisors Share New Agendas for the New Year | Travel Research Online. I know that’s 10 in all, I’ve added one more since last week!)

It’s going to be a busy year, travel advisors say. While for some the focus is on building their client base, making it more profitable, or marketing to new customers, others say their biggest challenge in 2024 is time management.

Public relations and media for travel advisors

Public relations includes:

  • media (articles about you),
  • networking
  • speaking opportunities,
  • events; and
  • writing (articles by you).

In each of these efforts, your personality is at the core of the marketing tactic. When the public reads an article about your agency, hears you speak, works with you at an event, or reads an article you have written, they engage you as an individual, not as a faceless company. That encounter is intensely personal and carries an authority that an advertisement cannot. People are trained to ignore advertising. They are equally well-trained to engage those in their presence. Travel Insurance: What Are The Essential Coverages?

Britton has been learning quite a bit about trip insurance. You’ll find her articles at this link. I recently reached out to Suzanne Morrow, Senior Vice President for InsureMyTrip.com to ask a couple of questions.

1. What are the top three coverages that a U.S. traveler to Europe would want in trip insurance?

Travel insurance isn’t one-size-fits-all. Every trip is different, and every traveler has different needs and concerns. With that said – if an American is traveling out of the country, we recommend they consider emergency medical and evacuation coverage. Most domestic health insurance, including Medicare, will not cover medical bills overseas. Read the rest of this entry »

You could be forgiven for not knowing about Riverside Luxury Cruises. After all, the company is a newcomer, first mentioned on our site one year ago.

That was in November 2022, when Riverside acquired the double-width river cruiser Mozart. The ship had been operating for Crystal River Cruises, which went bankrupt. Riverside snapped up Mozart and has since added two more of the ex-Crystal ships. Read the rest of this entry »

Recommended Viewing: Shadow Of A Wheel

Bikes and riverboats go together. So much so that we have a whole page dedicated to bicycling and river cruising. As a bike enthusiast, last week I attended the Asheville, NC premiere of a new movie, Shadow Of A Wheel. I believe many of our readers will relate to the film.

Shadow Of A Wheel was produced by an old friend, Paul Bonesteel. The feature-length film tells the story of 31 teenagers who spent one epic summer crossing America by bicycle in 1982. Read the rest of this entry »

7 Best River Cruises In Europe

Some of the challenges in choosing river cruises in Europe are the rivers themselves. Unless you’ve frequently traveled to Europe, you may not be familiar with geography of the rivers. Even for those who are familiar with the lay of the land, the list of rivers can be daunting. A quick glance at Wikipedia shows hundreds of rivers coursing through the European continent, including quite a few that I’ve never heard of, the Oise, for example, which I only learned about this year. I’ll be on that river with 21 others in May of 2024, as we barge along the Oise Read the rest of this entry »

Learning to Live with Generative AI

Jim Cramer, the host of CNBC’s Mad Money, recently said: “I know there’s a lot of hype here, and in some individual cases it is overblown, but anybody who tells you that AI is pure hype, that person is only fooling herself.”

That seems to be a reasonable middle ground somewhere between utopia and oblivion. It’s a safe generalization. It would be absurd to write off all of AI because ChatGPT doesn’t quite live up to some of the predictions.

It does seem that for this particular wave of AI, the language models, the magic carpet is descending toward Earth a bit. People are beginning to understand it better: what it is capable of, how to use it, what to beware of, and its limitations. Read the rest of this entry »

Do You Have Your Visa For Traveling Europe In 2024?

If your answer to our headline question was no, you’re probably fine. Despite what major media outlets are reporting, visas aren’t required for most of our regular readers to travel in Europe. If you are from the United States, Canada, Australia, Great Britain and a slew of other countries, you likely have no need for concern about obtaining a visa for travel to Europe in 2024. Storms are getting bigger, airplane parts are hard to come by, and the aviation industry is understaffed. So what’s a travel advisor to do when air travel is one big snafu and less dependable than ever?

To a certain extent, it depends on where your customer base is. In New York, for example, Laurie and Paul Bahna, owners of a Dream Vacations franchise in Plainview, found an easy option for taking the flying out of the equation altogether: cruising out of your home port.

“Paul and I truly believe that people are really tired of the airline cancellations,” Laurie says. “So many customers are saying that airline prices are very high and the airlines are just not consistent Read the rest of this entry »

AI, Misnomers and Misinformation

Few events have generated as much hype and controversy as the introduction of ChatGPT last October. When its developer, Open AI, provided open access to the generative AI program, the site set a record for the fastest growing user base in history. It grew to 100 million users in two months. At the same time, it generated a tsunami of wild speculation and panic.

It would be bad enough that artificial intelligence is predicted by some to take over the jobs of travel professionals and virtually everyone else. But since the arrival of ChatGPT, many of the pioneer developers of artificial intelligence have issued ominous warnings that AI may lead to Read the rest of this entry »
