Nobody Cares About You

I would like to help you begin your day with a blinding flash of the obvious.

“Today is the FIRST day of the rest of your life.”

You can skip right over my message, if you feel this is too elementary or lacks any creative substance. Like it, or not… endorse it, or not… it is as true as the nose on your face. Today is day one.

Today is another day you can wipe the slate clean and start again. What you do with it is entirely up to you. But, be forewarned. In a few short hours, it will become “yesterday’s news.” Don’t squander the opportunities that present themselves today. But this has nothing to do with today’s message.

For reasons I prefer not to share with you this morning, I woke up once again feeling like I got hit by a truck. When I peeked at the alarm clock and saw 5:45 am my back ached, my neck hurt, my legs felt numb and I could feel a slight twitch in my right ailing calk muscle. The sad news: this was nothing new. It was just another new day about to begin.

I managed to swing my legs off to the side of the bed and, with a little leverage from my left arm, I sat up and headed for the kitchen to perk a small pot of “joe.” Each step was a focused work in progress, but as I usually do, I arrived safely and begin scooping out the recommended amount of coffee per six cups of water.

Thanks for listening. Here comes the message. You don’t give a hoot about my aching bones. Nor should you. You have enough problems of your own without having to conjure up any sympathy for my daily ailment. Bottom Line: You don’t care about me.

And believe it or not, in a similar fashion, nobody cares about you. They have their own lives, concerns, dreams, problems, disappointments, challenges, regrets, aches, and pains. (Okay. Maybe one or two people actually do care about your well-being.)

I am reminded of the old saying, “Don’t tell anybody your problems. 90% of those you tell don’t care, and the other ten percent are glad you have them.” You have a life to live, things to do, experiences to experience, and Pandemics to deal with. And you will. In your own formidable way – with style – with grace –with empathy and with intelligence. (Or you won’t.)

But remember, either way, nobody cares about you. Press on. And there is no better day than today to begin your future.

I will continue to follow my morning regiment of stretching, while eventually walking off the stiffness. And, with any luck, by 10 am I will begin looking like a fully functioning human being. And I trust you will be doing the same. (Stay safe and don’t allow the goons in this world get you down.)

A great reminder! People like to be with upbeats, not downbeats (unless they’re conductors, of course.)
