I Have Initials After My Name. That’s Enough? Right?

In a word, no.

The world is in a state of flux. It always has been and always will be. So, it stands to reason that the travel business is also constantly changing. Destination trends come and go, new hotels and attractions open, and there are always new travel technologies to keep up with. As a travel professional, you will be left in the dust if you are not bringing your a-game. So that ACC, MCC, CTC, VTA, or DS after your name does not mean much unless you constantly extend that education.

Visiting Destinations in Person

One of the best ways to continue your education about a destination is to experience it firsthand. Doing so gives you a better sense of the destination’s culture, sights, attractions, and accommodation options. You also interact with locals and other travelers, which can lead to valuable insights and connections. Take advantage of supplier-sponsored FAM trips but understand why you are there. They are putting their best foot forward in hopes of earning your business. I tend to favor trips on my own time when the hotel’s GM is not expecting me. That way I get a feel for a property or a destination as a client would. Remember, you work for the client, not the supplier.

Participating in Training in Person

Many travel suppliers offer training sessions for travel agents. You can find them regionally, at travel shows, or you can likely arrange a private one for your office. Attending these sessions in person has many benefits. For one, you can network with suppliers and other travel professionals. You can also ask questions, get hands-on experience with new products, and hear what may be in the pipeline that may be perfect for your client!

Online Training

Of course, no one’s budget allows for travel to all destinations or properties. Online training is robust. This type of training is convenient as you can attend sessions from anywhere, as long as you have an internet connection on your schedule. While some paid courses exist, many webinars and training sessions are free. If one good thing came out of COVID, it was the prevalence of Zoom.

Knowledge is Power

Continuing your education is critical for any travel professional. The competition will soon pass those who take a pass. Knowledge will allow you to offer more informed advice and ensure your clients have the best travel experience possible. And a bonus (at least for me) is that after training, I am wholly re-enthused about my career!
