Start where you are. Use what you have. Do what you can.

To blatantly state the blinding flash of the obvious, another year has come and is nearly gone. What you did or did not accomplish in the year 2023 is now yesterday’s news. I’m sure you have a few things you can be proud of… and a few more things you wish you had addressed.

But as the British duo Chad and Jeremy reminded us in song back in 1964, Yesterday’s Gone, “But that was yesterday, and yesterday’s gone.”

The question I have for you, or dare I say, the challenge, is what are you planning to do in the coming days, weeks, months, and years to make a difference in your life?

In a few days, your slate will be wiped clean, and you will firmly be positioned in the driver’s seat looking straight ahead. So, what now?

At yet another winding road.

Start. man with a shoes is standing next to line and word START

On October 30th of this year, I came across this passage from Arthur Ashe, the late tennis great, “Start where you are. Use what you have. Do what you can.”

These twelve words resonated with me, and I thought they would serve as the ideal way to kick off the New Year without having to conjure up a bunch of useless New Year’s Resolutions.

Start where you are.

Dealing with the facts as they currently exist is a sign of (EI) Emotional Intelligence. You have not arrived at today by accident. You have achieved some very formidable progress up until now and you can’t overlook your successes to date.

Use what you have.

Leverage your strengths and appreciate the relationships you have developed over the years with suppliers, clients, and your Grade “A” prospects. Do not overlook your current health status and your potential to “get up, out and into your marketplace.”

Do what you can.

Attractive results will not come from a wish, a hope, or a prayer. Action is your six-letter plan. I agree that you can’t do everything, but you can do what you can do. My pointed question to you is: “Are you doing everything you can do?”

So here you have the only twelve words required to make 2024 a banner year. (1) Start where you are. (2) Use what you have. (3) Do what you can

Merry Christmas … and a happy, healthy, and fun-packed New Year.
